What is Bipolar disorder?
Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that affects mood, energy, thinking, and behavior. The key feature is that a person experiences extreme mood shifts — not just normal ups and downs — that can interfere with daily life.
Depression
- Low mood, sadness, or emptiness
- Loss of energy or interest
- Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
- Difficulty concentrating
- Feeling hopeless or slowed down
Mania or Hypomania
- Very high energy or racing thoughts
- Needing less sleep but not feeling tired
- Talking fast or jumping between ideas
- Feeling unusually confident or impulsive
- Sometimes risky decisions or irritability
- These shifts are medical mood episodes, not personality traits or choices.
- Imagine emotions have a volume knob. Sometimes turns way too low or way too high without the ability to choose the volumne.
- My brain sometimes runs on zero battery (depression) or 200% power (mania). Treatment helps regulate the charge.
- It’s like diabetes or thyroid disease — something that needs ongoing management, not judgment.
It’s a brain-based mood condition — not just moodiness.
